Western Challenge Cup (WCC)

WCC hosted by WCMBHA and SMBHA July 16-19, 2020

A bit of history....

Back in 1999 the minor ball hockey associations of BC and Alberta founded the Western Challenge Cup (WCC). As there was no National or Western Championships for minor ball hockey competitors, this tournament would serve as a venue to challenge skilled minor ball hockey players with a chance to compete against other teams throughout BC and Alberta at a higher competitive level. Since the start of the WCC, the tournament has been hosted by Edmonton, Calgary, Victoria and cities throughout the Lower Mainland. This tournament has grown over the years with a participation expectancy of a minimum of 32 teams each year. The tournament occurs over a 4 day period usually during the middle of July.

After 2018 there was a vote among the associations to reclassify the competing divisions. As a result and commencing in 2019 the age divisions eligible to play in the WCC are as follows:

  • U11 Division - players born in 2009 or earlier

  • U13 Division - players born in 2007 or earlier

  • U15 Division - players born in 2005 or earlier

  • U17 Division - players born in 2003 or earlier

  • U19 Division - players born in 2001 or earlier

The 2020 WCC tournament will be hosted by West Coast Minor Ball Hockey and Surrey Minor Ball Hockey Association in Surrey. For the first time, two new divisions have been added:

  • U16 Female Division - players born in 2004 or earlier

  • U19 Female Division - players born in 2001 or earlier

GVMBHA tryouts for its WCC teams (Vipers) will be scheduled for sometime in May, 2020.  All players are welcome to tryout for their age group team and a notice will be sent out closer to May with tryout dates and information.

Players will continue to play on their regular team until the end of the season. Generally there is 1-2 practices/week during the regular season starting the later part of May.  Teams may have home or away (Mainland) exhibition games on one or two weekends before WCC (TBD).

At this time, there are no fees for tryouts, practice/game floor time or referees for exhibitions game.  There are additional fees for travel to the Mainland for exhibition games and player team wear (not jerseys).  In addition, travel, hotel and food costs are fees each family must pay.
